"...It's like Art!"

A few days ago, my son had several of his teenaged friends over. They saw me propping up sample cabinet doors, multiple paint sample strips, and then pairing little squares of stain/floor color samples next to the cabinet door. Something similar to this current stack of mine:

One of the boys walked by and saw me studying my little tower of samples. He asked, "Is this what you do everyday now that you're building a house?" I said, "Yes, pretty much! This is my full-time job these days!" And much to my surprise, this 17 year old said to me, "That's so cool... it's like art!" Do you know how much I loved this simple, but true, statement? It made me view my house building project as a creative challenge! I love the way this kid inspired me!

Here are a few of the decisions I've been having to make lately:

Who knew picking a roof color was so tricky? (And, no, I didn't choose the bright green one!) It's amazing how you see these little sample boards and they look one way, in an office that has fluorescent lighting, and look totally different on an actual house! This has all been a great learning experience for me.

Although I have many, many more decisions to make, we are actually enjoying the process. I'm not saying it's easy or that we have all the answers, but it's a fun journey to be on! It's also kind of cute when my hardworking husband calls me between important client meetings and says, "Hey, Babe! Let's talk windows for a minute...!" :)

Here's our progress so far. Keep in mind that it's slow-go with wintertime building, but it's exciting to be getting started!

They're starting to dig our basement. (If I look closely and squint, I think I see what will be my storm room!)

Forms, and basement was poured the next week!

I know this doesn't look like much to you guys, but the progress, and the story these pictures tell, is priceless to me. One day it's going to be so fun to look back on these photos. (Preferably when I'm sitting back in my new house, all unpacked and organized, and thinking to myself, "Yay, we did it!!")

I hope this blog post inspires you to view daily projects or chores in your own life more like creative challenges. You instantly gain a new perspective and you actually enjoy the process. Thanks W.M. for making me realize this!

Wow, that's a deep hole!
How exciting for you all, to be building your own house.

We had a bedroom added, over our kitchen extension, in 2009. I kept day-by-day photos and I'm so glad I did - it's great to look back on it all. I'm still making the "The Project" scrapbook - and soon we hope to start on the next project!

Enjoy it as much as you can and try not to let it get you stressed out. At least you don't have to live there while the work is going on around you - that really causes some stress!

Good luck & keep us up to date on progress!

Sherry & Lizzie - I'm sure I'll be posting more pics as the build continues; it keeps me going when I see it progressing! Lizzie, enjoy your bedroom addition! I'd love to see your project book! Thanks, Ladies, for stopping by! :)

Such a fun process! I'm popping over from GardenWeb. We moved into our house a year ago, and while I loved the decision-making process, I love living in our dream house even more!

Hi southernmum! This is downsy from GW (and in your neck of the woods.) I will have to travel up to see your build sometime. Everything will go well and I know you will burst with pride each time you drive up to your new home.
